I often have people tell me that they know someone (or someones) that could use a coach. But they’re not sure if it’s ok to share a coach referral because basically, they feel like they’re telling them that there is something wrong with them.

The first part of this is to reframe who sees a coach. Executive coaches aren’t just for ‘failing’ employees or CEOs. It’s a coach’s job to partner with anyone to help them get to wherever it is they want to go. We’re not fixing suboptimal we’re taking you from functional to optimal. Making you a priority. Having new awarenesses. And yes some accountability.

Most of my clients do come to me because they’re at a point where they’re ready for something different. And maybe it’s because things aren’t working so great. Maybe they want a promotion. Maybe they got a promotion and now have greater responsibilities and a team to manage. Maybe they mostly like their jobs but aren’t sure they can keep up this hectic pace until they retire. Or maybe they’re just not quite sure what they want next.

But here’s the tricky thing. Most of my clients have spent a lot of time thinking about their next phase. But they’re smart people so they think they can figure it out on their own or that there might not be a solution. Some people might not be familiar with coaching, it is still a relatively new industry. And many people actually think they’re too busy for a coach.

But you and I know that a coach will help them save time and get farther, faster, and more sustainably by focusing on the right things in the right way.

If there’s someone you know who you think could benefit from coaching here are a few easy ways to introduce the topic:

  • Personal benefit – If you’ve seen a coach or been exposed to content like email or social media from a coach you can share how beneficial it’s been for you.
  • Broken record – If you’ve got one of those friends who keeps mentioning the same topics, either complaints or wishes, you can say I know a coach who works on that very thing, you should check her out (again email or social works but you can also point them to the website).
  • This post – If you’re feeling a little cheeky you can just share this post 😉

A few of my clients have come through their spouses because why wouldn’t your partner share a resource that is going to help you? Remember you’re sharing because you think it would benefit them.

And of course, coaches are all very different. Not only their experience, training, and format, but the chemistry between a coach and client is incredibly important. If I’m ever not the right fit I do my best to provide suggestions that can include a helpful referral.
